The texture of Adelaide city is studded with a plethora of fun, quirky and enlightening delights to be caught by keen eyes such as photographer Kylie Fleming in this collage for Fabula Files.

The four examples of Kylie Fleming’s fun finds around the city are (clockwise from left).

Rabbitwoman and Dogman sculptures by artists Gillie and Marc invite you to join them at their table upstairs at David Jones store in Rundle Mall. They are a variation on similar bronze sculptures by the duo installed in major cities worldwide.

Eyrie, a public sculpture created by Australian artist Bronwyn Oliver in 1993-1994 is on the façade of the InterContinental Hotel (formerly the Hyatt Hotel) next to Adelaide Railway Station building seen at left. Another of Oliver’s intricate metal works, in with copper and bronze, featuring a distinctive verdigris (green) patina, its spiral cage-like structure mimics natural forms like shells or bird nests.

A magpie adds a touch of cheekiness to the Amalthea and Jupiter’s goat sculpture in the Adelaide Botanic Garden. This is a 19th Century French cast-iron copy bought at public auction in New South Wales by the Friends of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens in 1990. It is based on marble ensemble by Pierre Julien (1731-1804) of the nymph Amalthea and the goat that nurtured Jupiter, commissioned by Louis XVI in 1787 for Marie Antoinette’s dairy at the Château de Rambouillet, now at the Musée du Louvre.

Labyrynth is a metal mentally-stimulating interactive work of art designed as a maze in the shape of a brain. It was created by artist Rod Manning, inspired by the McLaren Vale Labyrinth bike trail. The artwork was bought by Uniting Communities in 2020 from the Patritti Brighton Jetty sculptures exhibition and installed alongside its complex in Frankin Street.
